LAPIP® Treatment for Failing Implants in Palatine, IL

The LAPIP™ protocol is the only patient-friendly, predictable laser treatment for ailing and failing dental implants. Using the same PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser as the LANAP® protocol, LAPIP destroys the bacteria around an infected implant, encourages bone regrowth, and gives hope for implants that other dentists have called “hopeless.”

Studies indicate that 95% of implants with peri-implantitis treated with the LAPIP™ protocol re-integrate in the pocket and stabilize with bone growth of 3–8 threads.

Designed to save implants

Stops the progression of peri-implant disease, destroys the bacteria causing the inflammation, and encourages new bone growth around the implant.

Patient friendly

No cutting, no stitches, no foreign materials or growth factors. Less recession, less recovery, and less discomfort than traditional implant rescue procedures.

First-line treatment

LAPIP® is a no-risk option that preserves every other treatment path. Controlling peri-implant disease makes it possible to save and protect your implant investment.

Loose, painful, or inflamed implant? The earlier we treat peri-implantitis, the more bone we can save.

Peri-Implant Disease Mimics Gum Disease

The implant itself can’t become diseased, but the tissue around the implant can become infected. Just as gum disease starts with mild inflammation and progresses if untreated, peri-implant disease begins as peri-mucositis — minor inflammation around the implant — and, if ignored, advances to peri-implantitis, where the bone supporting the implant erodes and the implant becomes loose.

Several factors can trigger the initial inflammation, including existing periodontal bacteria, foreign material wedged in the gums around the implant, and even implant connectors that misalign.

Signs of Moderate-to-Advanced Peri-Implantitis

  • Swelling in the gums around the implant
  • Implant mobility — the implant feels loose
  • Bleeding gums around the implant site
  • Change in gum color surrounding the implant
  • High gum sensitivity
  • Implant exposure — gum recession that no longer covers the implant or crown
  • Mild to severe pain at the implant site
  • Pus from the tissues around the implant

How LAPIP® Helps

  • Removes only the diseased tissue, leaving healthy tissue intact
  • Eliminates the infection without antibiotics
  • Helps maintain the height of the tissue around the implant
  • Minimizes pain and discomfort during and after treatment
  • Seals the periodontal pocket to allow healing
  • Most patients need just one appointment
  • Safe for medically compromised patients, those on blood thinners, or with diabetes

The LAPIP™ Treatment Procedure

The LAPIP™ procedure is performed in our Palatine office under local anesthetic and can often be done at the same visit as your diagnosis. Patient education and comfort are the foundation of every visit — our team will explain every step before we begin and provide detailed home-care instructions for the best possible recovery.

Step by Step

  1. The area is fully numbed with local anesthetic
  2. Depending on the implant, we may remove the implant crown for access
  3. The PerioLase® MVP-7™ vaporizes bacteria, diseased tissue, and titanium corrosion contaminants in the soft tissue
  4. An ultrasonic scaler removes hardened debris from the implant surface
  5. Bone is gently modified to release stem cells
  6. The laser seals the pocket to prevent re-infection and aids in regeneration
  7. Your bite is adjusted to support healing and long-term stability

After Your LAPIP® Visit

  • No brushing or flossing of the treated area for the first week
  • Maintain a soft diet for the prescribed amount of time
  • No smoking or tobacco use during recovery
  • Take any prescribed medications exactly as directed
  • Attend all follow-up visits so we can monitor healing and make any small adjustments

Frequently Asked Questions

Peri-implantitis is an infection occurring around a dental implant. Gums may be red, inflamed, or receding, and over time the infection causes bone loss that can lead to the implant becoming loose and falling out.

Both are infections around the implant. Peri-mucositis is the early, soft-tissue stage and does not yet involve bone loss. Peri-implantitis is the more advanced stage where bone loss has begun.

If left untreated, the infection continues to destroy the supporting bone. The implant will become loose and may fall out, and the infection can spread to the natural teeth around the implant.

Just as with gum disease, there are several causes — including poor oral care, teeth grinding, diabetes, osteoporosis, a compromised immune system, smoking, and a previous diagnosis of periodontal disease.

Most patients report significantly less discomfort than traditional implant rescue surgery. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and because there is no cutting or suturing, post-operative discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.

Many dental insurance plans cover LAPIP® under their periodontal surgery benefits. We will help you understand your specific coverage and provide a written treatment plan with costs before any work begins. We also offer financing options for any out-of-pocket portion.
